Title: The New York Philharmonic Kidzone!

Subject: Music: symphonic instruments, composers, performers, etc.


Grade level: elementary

Objective for the use of this site: To learn about the different instruments in a symphony orchestra, as well as to learn about different composers, performers, etc.

Evaluation summary:

This is a great site! There is a wealth of information for the students to learn from, and it provides lots of exploration and interaction for the students. The information and sound/graphic examples would also be beneficial to use in the classroom!

I visited this site many times, and I never had an issue with quickly downloading the home page.

  • The homepage is designed attractively and will entice my students to further exploration.

5    Each link is labeled according to the purpose of the page it is linking. It is clear, but also enticing the students to find out more.

4.  Use of Graphics/Sounds/Videos

  • The graphics/sounds/videos are clearly labeled and clearly identified.
 5  The graphics are labeled whenever the cursor is dragged over the graphic. The sounds occur within the instrument which is chosen.
  • The graphics/sounds/videos serve a clear purpose appropriate for my intended audience.
 5 The sounds and graphics used are either to provide labeling for the person exploring the site, or to demonstrate what something sounds or looks like.
  • The graphics/sounds.videos will aid my students in reacing the desired objectives for using this site.
 5  The sounds especially enhance the learning process for the students because they are not only able to see what something (instrument, composer, etc) looks like, but also see what it sounds like.

  • This site offers a wealth of information related to my stated objectives.
 5 The site provides many different avenues for children to explore composers, composing, instruments, performers, etc.
  • The information is clearly labeled and organized, and will be easily understood by my students.

This site contains infomration that will make stops at designated points worthwhile, but students will need more structured guidance in order to reach instructional goals.  A list of bookmarks to specific pages and/or links is advisable, as is frequent discussion of student progress.

Although useful information exists at this site, its most effective contribution to my objectives will be in whole-class instruction where I can guide exploration and keep students on task.
